Will Liposuction Tighten Sagging Skin?
Even with a healthy diet and exercise, some of our patients may still have stubborn fat they want to remove. At Rejuve Aesthetic Surgery, we offer this fat reduction surgery that removes stubborn belly fat and sculpts the body. This body contouring procedure easily reduces fat on the arms, stomach, thighs, buttocks, and hips. Depending on a patient’s needs, we can use liposuction in Tampa, FL on many different body parts at once. During your consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brandon-Dzung Mang, he will listen to your goals and look at your body to determine if liposuction is right for you. He will explain if you have realistic expectations for your surgery too.
Am I a candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is a good option for someone who is at a healthy weight and has areas of fat they haven’t been able to lose with a healthy diet and exercise. The best candidate is someone with healthy skin laxity, as liposuction doesn’t help with saggy skin. Also, we recommend that women patients interested in liposuction be done having children as another pregnancy can affect their results. Dr. Mang doesn’t recommend liposuction as a weight loss solution and believes that a healthy diet and exercise are necessary to maintain your results.
What happens during liposuction?
At Rejuve Aesthetic Surgery, liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. The surgery goes as follows:
-
Dr. Mang will make a small incision in the skin and then places a cannula inside this incision.
-
The cannula is used to loosen fat and remove it.
-
Once the fat is removed, he will close the incision with sutures.
Depending on the number of areas that are being treated, your surgery could last several hours. After surgery, in the recovery room, a post-op nurse helps you manage your pain and looks at your incisions before you are discharged.
Liposuction recovery
Recovery from liposuction will vary from one to three weeks, depending on how many areas of your body you had treated and the size of the treatment area. Swelling and bruising are normal for a few weeks after surgery. Your stitches will be removed 7 – 10 days after surgery at our Tampa, FL office. Dr. Mang will recommend you start with light exercise and short walks until you rebuild your strength.
Skin after liposuction
As fat develops, your skin stretches to accommodate it. When liposuction is performed, and fat cells are removed, the skin remains unchanged and won’t shrink down after your surgery. This is why it’s important that Dr. Mang evaluates your skin elasticity before having surgery to see whether or not it can bounce back.
For patients who are interested in skin removal surgery, we offer skin removal surgery that can address sagging skin in different parts of your body, including:
-
Tummy tuck: As you gain weight, your skin becomes stretched, which will cause elasticity to go away. This loose, excess stomach skin can be removed, and the area tightened during tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Mang will trim away excess skin and tighten the abdominal area. Liposuction can be used with this surgery for the best body contouring results.
-
Arm lift: Brachioplasty helps reshape the under portion of your upper arm. It can both tighten and smooth this tissue and remove sagging skin or pockets of fat. An incision is made from the elbow to the underarm during this fat removal surgery.
