What is Ear Pinning?

Ears that protrude outward, look misshapen and uneven, or appear too large can negatively impact your self-esteem, especially when younger. Otoplasty (ear reshaping) is a cosmetic procedure that helps to reshape, resize, and reposition the ears. Dr. Brandon-Dzung Mang is a skilled plastic surgeon in Tampa, FL who has helped many adults and children look and feel better about their ears. No matter the issue, Dr. Mang can develop the best surgical plan to meet your cosmetic needs. If you feel embarrassed about the size or shape of your ears, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Mang to receive additional information about ear recontouring surgery.

Is Ear Surgery For You?

We can perform ear surgery on patients at any age; however, the treatment is extremely common for young children. Generally, we recommend having your child undergo ear surgery before starting elementary school. By age six, this procedure is safe and effective for children. If you feel self-conscious about the look, size, shape, or projection of your ears, you may be an ideal candidate for otoplasty. Ear surgery can help you feel more confident and live more comfortably. If you suffer from a torn or damaged earlobe, cosmetic ear surgery can also help treat these issues.

Surgical Technique

In one of our AAAHC-accredited operating rooms, we will start your surgery by administering general anesthesia or IV sedation. The incision is made around the back portion of the ear or within the inner ear. During this procedure, Dr. Mang will reshape the cartilage to create a smaller or larger appearance. Typically, patients have this procedure completed on both ears. This ensures the ears look the same and appear even. Following the procedure, we close the incisions with sutures and carefully bandage your ears so they can safely heal.

What to Expect

After monitoring you in a recovery room, a member of our team will discharge you and send you home to recover. Before returning home, patients receive detailed aftercare instructions to encourage proper healing. Additionally, we will schedule a follow-up appointment in about a week so Dr. Mang can assess your healing progress. When returning home, you should avoid touching, picking, or scratching the ears. You also need to sleep upright for the first several days. At your follow-up appointment, Dr. Mang removes the bandages and assesses you or your child's surgical results. Almost immediately, the results are noticeable, and they will continue to look better as the ears heal.

Ear Pinning FAQ

How long do the results of ear pinning last?
Normally, the ears grow faster than other parts of the body and face, which is the reason why ear surgery can be carried out on younger patients with long-term results. Dr. Mang will evaluate the ears and then talk about what to expect and also how long the outcomes may last. While the rest of the body and face can change dramatically from age and gravity, the effect on the ears is usually minimal. If there are dramatic modifications to the ears due to an injury, another otoplasty might be done.

How old should my child be to consider otoplasty (ear pinning)?
Typically, kids about 5 – 6 years of age are ideal candidates for ear surgery. Although the ear is generally fully developed, the cartilage and tissue will still be soft, which makes it easy to reshape. This age is also great since it is before they start school or early in their education, so they can avoid teasing. Even though a lot of otoplasty patients are young children, Dr. Mang also performs otoplasty on adults.

Do I need to have both ears done or just one?
Many problems, including ears that are too large or stick out, occur in both ears, so both will need to be fixed. During the surgery, Dr. Mang will adjust both ears to make them as equal as possible. However, if just one ear needs to be changed, the shape and size will be altered to mirror the other ear. When he creates your surgical plan, Dr. Mang will let you know if only one or both ears need to be corrected.

What about fixing stretched or torn earlobes?
The popularity of ear gauges and big earrings has made earlobe reconstruction a very sought-after operation at Rejuve Aesthetic Surgery. If you are interested in having earlobe surgery, schedule an appointment with Dr. Mang. He will examine your ear(s) and let you know what could be done in order to restore your earlobes.
