Is Liposuction Right For You?
Fat removal surgery is a great treatment option for patients who maintain a healthy weight but have stubborn areas of fat on the body. If you're considering liposuction, you should have healthy skin laxity because liposuction does not address saggy skin. It's also important to know that liposuction is not a treatment for weight loss. Women who want liposuction should be past pregnancy because this could compromise the outcomes. During your consultation, Dr. Mang will help set realistic expectations and create a detailed treatment plan.
How is Liposuction performed?
Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia. In one of our private, AAAHC-accredited operating rooms, we start your surgery by creating a small incision and placing a specialized tool called a cannula. The cannula makes it easier to loosen the fat and remove it. Once Dr. Mang has eliminated the fat, he will close the small incision with a suture. Based on the size and number of treatment areas, your surgery could last several hours. In the recovery room, your post-op nurse will help manage any discomfort and look after your incisions until your discharge.
What should I Expect after liposuction?
After liposuction, you will need about 1 – 3 weeks of recovery. The amount of time is based on the number of treatment areas and how much fat we remove. Generally, you experience swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks, and in about 7 – 10 days, you can have the stitches removed. After undergoing liposuction, you should give your body enough time to rest and recover. When you can resume daily activities, you should remember to take it easy. To build up your strength, we recommend going for short walks and completing light workouts. You may experience changes soon after your surgery, but it will take 6 – 10 months before your new body shape and contour is complete.
Liposuction FAQ
How much does liposuction cost?
Your cost for liposuction varies based on the technique selected and the number of areas being addressed. During your consultation, Dr. Mang will create your custom treatment plan based on your needs and goals. He will also take into consideration your budget. Once your plan is ready, estimated costs can be discussed. To make your surgery affordable, Rejuve Aesthetic Surgery accepts several payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing.
What about nonsurgical liposuction?
There are several nonsurgical options to reduce fat. Some of the most popular brands are CoolSculpting®, Vanquish, UltraShape®, KYBELLA®, and Liposonix. Although some of these nonsurgical procedures can help reduce small amounts of fat, surgical liposuction is still best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more dramatic and consistent results. Ask Dr. Mang about nonsurgical options during your consultation. He can explain the benefits and drawbacks of both methods and help you choose which is best for you.
What about cellulite and loose skin?
Liposuction surgery only addresses excess fat in the body. If you have loose skin, Dr. Mang may recommend combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Liposuction is often performed with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, thighplasty, or arm lift, to produce the best results. For cellulite, there are several minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments, including VelaShape®, Cellulaze, VASER® Shape, and Venus Freeze™. During your consultation, tell Dr. Mang about your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so your best treatment plan can be created.
Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will need to be made and sutured. These will create scars; however, Dr. Mang does his best to minimize their appearance. This includes making small, thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Mang or a member of his team will explain how to care for your incisions — so they heal properly and eventually fade.
Will my results last?
Before you have liposuction surgery, it's important to be prepared to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Mang recommends that you be at or near a healthy weight before having liposuction surgery. Afterward, it is best to remain within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Pregnancy after liposuction will also affect your results; however, another surgery or mommy makeover can be performed to refresh your appearance.
